From the earliest days of Chicano theatre comes this satire of California farm-worker family life, in which the drunken father’s a sonavaviche and the long-suffering mother’s a saint. Of their four children, Mingo’s a sell-out, Joaquin a rebellious pachuco, and Lupe a whining teenager who envisions pregnancy as her only salvation. And the eldest? Just an enormous head who believes he’s Pancho Villa. To this hilariously disintegrating household, Mingo announces his intention to move his family out of the barrio and into the American dream. But will a seductive nostalgia for Mexico’s revolutionary past overwhelm his efforts? It’s the Chicano dilemma: Are we Mexican or American?

Teddy's life has lost all meaning, and his wife has lost all patience. A feel-good, heartfelt, life-affirming production from Third Rail. No, seriously.
Neil Simon's comedic tribute to vaudeville centers around the feuding legendary act known as Lewis and Clark. Having not spoken to one another for 11 years (since Al Lewis walked out on Willie Clark after a successful 43 year career), the two are now being asked to reunite and perform their most famous sketch for a TV special on the history of comedy.

“If you can’t get a man to propose to you, you might as well be dead.” - “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale

Once among the brightest names on the social register, these two women became East Hampton’s most notorious recluses, living in a dilapidated 28-room mansion with their 52 cats.

The annual Newmark Theatre performances include an emotionally charged OBT premiere by Nicolo Fonte, the choreographer of the company’s new Bolero, plus the whirlwind force of William Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude and Balanchine’s flirtatiously energetic Tarantella. The program’s exclamation point is a major world premiere by James Kudelka – the choreographer of Almost Mozart who in 2007, with “impeccable craftsmanship” and “inventive, technical twists,” left Portland audiences and critics alike “breathless in his wake.” (Willamette Week).
We close the season with four Portland performances of Rush, the Christopher Wheeldon masterpiece we took to Washington DC for our Kennedy Center debut. We also pay tribute to the memory of a true American icon in Jerome Robbins. Interactive murder mystery dinner theatre. They came from back East by wagon and ship, then fate brought them together at a Mayor's Ball in the early 1850s. But darker currents run through this frontier settlement, and when a mysterious man with more than one story is murdered, fingers of accusation point in every direction, even toward the legendary Dr. John McLoughlin. It takes the perseverance of Marshal Joe Meek to sort the guilty from the innocent and bring justice to the Oregon Territory.

The Portland Japanese Garden will host the exhibition Parallel Worlds: Art of the Ainu of Hokkaido and Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest.
The cultures of the Ainu and of the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest have much in common—a deep love of nature, a belief in the spirit in all of creation, respect for plants, animals and other human beings—and much to be proud of in their traditional cultures—a rich artistic heritage and a harmonious environmental and social model that has much to teach the world today.
Like Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest—and most of the great indigenous peoples of the world—unfortunately, much of the art and culture of the Ainu of Japan has been lost with their forced assimilation into the broader mainstream societies and changing political fortune.
Fortunately, enough material culture remained in museum cabinets and private collections around the world to inspire a generation of newly awakened 20th-century descendants of Native people on both sides of the North Pacific, launching a revival of the traditions and techniques that inspired their ancestors centuries ago.
Parallel Worlds: Art of the Ainu of Hokkaido and to Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest looks at this and other historical and artistic resonances between the two distant but interestingly similar cultures in an exhibition of traditional textiles made by artists from both worlds.
The title of the exhibition, Parallel Worlds, refers to the Ainu concept that life consists of two parallel realities—that of the physical world and another unseen, but equally real spiritual world. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association, this exhibition explores the parallels between our two regions that go back to ancient times—to the first people who inhabited these lands on both sides of the North Pacific.
Through this comparative exhibition of traditional textiles by Ainu and Native American artists, it is our hope to celebrate these centuries-old connections and rejoice in the parallel spirit that continues to bring these two places on earth together.
